L' été dernier, j' ai craqué... et je me suis saigné encore une bonne fois pour me payer une MD doll de Soom: Cass! Un genre de sirène... clair qu' il me la FALLAIT! =^_^=

Son nom est Cymothoé, ce qui signifie "la Vague Rapide" en Grec ancien.
Il appartient à l' une des cinquante Néréides de la mythologie grecque, ces merveilleuses nymphes marines incarnant les beautés de la mer, filles de Nérée, le Vieillard de la Mer (oui oui, voir Némertès pour plus d' info!).

Bien que je lui aie donné le nom d' une bienveillante Néréide, je la vois plus comme une dangereuse Sirène... pas maléfique mais plutôt sauvage et principalement animale, et imprévisible comme la mer elle-même.

C'est pourquoi je la voulais "ultra-poissonneuse" pour refléter cette nature animale!

J' ai encore beaucoup de boulot sur elle, mais voici ce à quoi je suis arrivé jusqu' à présent.

Last summer I gave in again... and beld myself buying a MD doll by Soom: Cass! A mermaid BJD of sorts... She HAD to be mine! =^_^=

Her name is Cymothoé, which means the "Swift Wave" in ancient Greek.
It belongs to one of the fifty Nereids of greek mythology, those wonderful sea-nymphs embodying the beauty of the sea; daughters of Nereus, the Old Man of the Sea (yes, see Nemertes for more!).

Although I gave her the name of a benevolent Nereid, I see her more like a dangerous Siren... not evil, but wild and mostly animal, and unpredictable as the very sea itself.

So I wanted her to be "extra-fishy" to reflect that animal nature!

I still have a lot of work on her, but that's how far I've gone.

Rusalka

En russe, "rusalka" (prononcer "roussalka" en roulant suavement le r! ) désigne en fait plusieurs créatures différentes quoique fort proches.

Il peut s' agir d'une ondine, créature élémentaire de l' eau; d' une nymphe ou fée aquatique; d' une sirène à queue de poisson... que l' on retrouve dans les folklores du monde entier.

Mais il peut aussi s' agir d' une créature plus propre au folklore slave et qui est en fait fort proche des vampire en ce sens qu' elle est comme eux d' origine humaine et comme eux, une "Undead", une "Non-morte".

Les rusalki sont des jeunes filles qui se sont noyées par désespoir amoureux avant leur mariage, qu' elles aient été abandonnées ou que leur bien-aimé soit mort à la guerre. En ce sens, l' Ophélie d' Hamlet a dû en devenir une car elle remplit toutes les conditions (et c'est ce que nous suggère le poème d' Arthur Rimbaud...)!

Bref, en rendant leur dernier souffle dans le cours d' eau dans lequel elles se sont jetées, elles ne rendent pas l' âme. Il s' opère une étrange symbiose entre leur tristesse, l' eau et leur âme et elles deviennent des sortes de créatures élémentales, belles mais fatales car leur baiser donne la mort.

L' eau a remplit leur âme et leurs veines et les a refroidies en une espèce d' engourdissement étrange. Elles deviennent alors soit inhumaines et insouciantes comme des animaux; soit somnolent au fond de l' onde...

Mais si un jeune homme vient à passer près de leur repère, la chaleur de leur vie et de leur jeunesse les attire comme un aimant ou un papillon vers la flamme.
Elles se mettent à l' affut perchées sur un arbre, puis séduisent alors le malheureux par leur beauté, leurs chants et leurs danses et au moment du fatidique baiser, la chaleur de l' âme humaine leur réchauffe le coeur et leur propre âme refroidie par l' onde et leur font se souvenir de leur amour perdu ainsi que de la vie et ses joies...
...mais leur font aussi réaliser qu' elles sont la cause de la mort d' un innocent et que cet amour auquel elles aspirent leur est interdit car leur étreinte est fatale.

Désespérées, elles retournent alors à l' eau qui peu à peu les apaise et refroidit leur coeur, peu à peu elles oublient à nouveau tout sentiment et reprennent alors leur étrange demi-existence parmi les vagues...

...jusqu' à leur prochaine victime!

Elles peuvent se tenir en bandes, entre elles ou avec d' autres créatures semblables comme les ondines et les sirènes, d' où la confusion.

Mais souvent, ce sont des solitaires...

Voici l' une de ces tragiques mais fatales créatures.

In russian, "rusalka" (don't forget to suavely roll the r! ) actually refers to several different (although very similar) creatures.

A rusalka can be an undine, an elemental of water; a nymph or an aquatic fairy; a fish-tailed mermaid, a figure that can be found all over the world.

But a rusalka is also a creature more specific and particular to slavic folklore, quite close to the vampires in the sense that she has, like them, a human origin and was turned into an undead creature.

Those Rusalki are young maidens who drowned themselves before their wedding out of amorous despair; wether they had been abandonned by their beloved ones or that those died at war. In that light, Hamlet 's Ophelia must have become one for she certainly satisfies all requirements (and that's what Arthur Rimbaud's poem certainly suggests us.)!

In short, by expiring their last breath into the river or pool into which they had throwned themselves, they don't quite "give up the ghost"... a weird symbiosis occurs between their sadness, the water and their souls; and thus they become a fashion of elemental creatures, beautiful but lethal for their kiss brings only death.

The water fills their souls and their veins, cooling them in a strange drowsiness. Then they either become utterly inhuman and carefree like animals; or they slumber underwater, waiting...

But if some young man comes near their lair, the heat of his life and youth draws them like a magnet or like a moth to a flame.
They lie in wait on top of a near-by tree, then climb down to seduce the infortunate lad with their beauty, their songs and dances... and at the very moment of the fatal kiss, the heat of the young human soul warms up their own heart and soul numbed by the coolness of the waters and makes them remember their lost love, and life and all its forgotten joys...
...but also brings back a glimpse of humanity and conscience that makes them realize they just caused the death of an innocent one, and that the love which they crave so much is forbidden to them by their lethal embrace.

Desperate, they sink back into the waters of their pool, which gradually soothe them and cool their heart, making them forget everything again and thus they resume their eerie underwater half-life...

...until their next victim!

They can either gather in bands, between themselves or with other similar creatures like mermaids and undines, hence the confusion.

But they're mostly loners...

... Elle a en fait beaucoup d' autres noms.
L' idée de base était qu' il s' agissait d' un Démon du Chaos au nom parfaitement imprononçable (du moins pour les larynx humains!) décidant chaque jour d' un nouveau nom "humain" pour les prochaines vingt-quatre heures. Le piège étant qu' elle n' obéirait à son invocateur (-trice...) que si il/elle parvenait à le deviner en trois coups maximum, à la Rumpelstiltskin...
Mais finalement, ça m' a paru un chouïa trop hardu, même pour un sorcier chevronné; c'est pourquoi j' ai réduit la condition à un nom par invocation.

Bref vous l' avez compris: c'est une bien facétieuse petite biquette, joyeuse et imprévisible...

Elle m' a d' ailleurs bien eu par surprise. Elle n' a pas du tout été un achat planifié et considéré. C'est une Bobobie Charisma Demon Girl et je suis complètement tombé amoureux de son sourire de Joconde et de son air malicieux.
C'est pourquoi je lui ai donné un maquillage simplissime, pour rester le plus proche possible de sa sculpture originale et la mettre ainsi mieux en valeur. Aucune modification ne m' a parue nécessaire.

Avec le temps, elle s'est trouvée elle-même son propre style, sans que ce soit planifié ou réfléchi de ma part... j' ai juste "senti" ce qui était juste pour elle.
Comme le fait qu' elle ne porte que des nuances de violet, mauve ou lavende pour s' accorder à son maquillage et sa peau bleue, comme une jolie fleur vénéneuse.
Je vous présente donc la Demoiselle, portant différents costumes historiques reflétant ses invocations diverses à travers le temps et l' espace (qui ne comptent pas pour elle vu sa nature); accompagné à chaque fois (ou du moins, je l' ai essayé; toute aide ou suggestion est la bienvenue!) d' un nom différent et approprié.

Les voici... j' espère que vous l' apprécierez autant que moi!

... She actually comes by many names.
The original idea was that she was a Chaos Demon with an unpronounceable name (for human larynxes, I mean...) that would decide every day on a different "human" name for the next twenty-four hours. The twist being, she wouldn't quite obey her summoner if he/she couldn't guess it in three trials, Rumpelstiltskin-style...
But I eventually thought that would be a little too difficult, even for a skilled summoner, so I tuned it down to a name per summoning.

So you get the idea anyway: she's an umpredictable, playful, mischievous little goat.

That's how she got me by surprise anyway. She wasn't a planned buy at all. She's a Bobobie Charisma Demon Girl and I completely fell for her Mona-Lisa-like grin and overall expression.
Which is why I gave her a very simple make-up to stay as close as possible to her original mold. No modds at all.

With time, she found herself her own style, nothing planned either: it just "felt" right for her. Like she will only wear shades of purple, lavender or mauve... to blend in with her make-up and blue skin, like a pretty but venomous flower.

Meet the Mademoiselle, wearing different period outfits... They reflect her various summonings through time and space (which don't mean a thing to her, given her nature); with each time a new name (or so I tried, any help or suggestion is most welcome!).

Encore un mini-article pour une mini-poupée...
Ce mois-ci, je déménage, donc je ne serai à nouveau pas très présent hélas...

Mais je ne résiste pas au plaisir de vous présenter une de mes plus charmantes pensionnaires,

Némertès.

C'est une de mes poupées-sirènes, une autre de mes passions, plus ancienne encore: la sirénophilie ou mermaphilie (car nous devons le concept à nos amis anglais apparemment).
Le thème de la femme-poisson m' a toujours passionné, et cela... depuis au moins la maternelle!
Ne me demandez pas, ça doit être atavique...

Némertès est donc une mini-sirène, une sirène-sardine en quelque sorte.

Son nom est celui d' une des cinquante Néréides, déesses des vagues; filles de Nérée, le "Vieillard de la Mer" qui incarne son aspect bénéfique, ami des pêcheurs et bateliers.
Il signifie: la "Loyale". Je la voyais en effet comme une auxiliaire fidèle de mes plus grandes poupées-sirènes, que je vous présenterai par la suite...

Pour l' anecdote, c'est une Mini-Gem de chez Soom. C'est une des rares poupées que je n' ai pas maquillé ou retouché moi-même (seule sa queue de poisson est de moi) car j' avais été séduit par sa délicatesse et je ne désirais rien y ajouter.
J' avais juste demandé à l' équipe de Soom de lui faire son maquillage dans les tons bleus car je désirais en faire une créature marine...
...quelques mois plus tard sortait leur superbe Monthly Doll Vega, un triton dans les tons bleus... pur hasard ou les "grands esprits" se rencontrent-ils vraiment?

J' aime à m' imaginer que je leur ai soufflé l' idée! ;p Juste pour rire...
Même si il est vrai qu' ils n' en étaient pas à leur première sirène... quoiqu'il en soit, ils ont fait du beau boulot.

Voilà donc la demoiselle-sardine.

I'm moving out this month, so I'm afraid I won't be around a lot these days...

But I cannot resist the pleasure to introduce one of my most charming residents,

Némertès.

She is one of my mermaid dolls; another of my many addictions, yet older than my doll addiction: sirenophilia or mermaphilia (as in mermaid for it seems that we owe that concept to our English friends).
The motif of the fish-woman has always appealed to me... ever since kindergarten!
Don't ask, must be an atavic thing...

So Némertès is a mini-mermaid, a sardine-mermaid of sorts.

Her name belongs to one of the fifty Nereids, beautiful goddesses of the waves; daughters of Nereus, the "Old Man of the Sea" who incarnates its most benevolent aspect, friend to fishermen and sailors.
It means: "the Faithful One". I was indeed picturing her as a faithful little helper of my bigger mermaid dolls, whom I will present later on...

Incidentally, she is a Mini-Gem from Soom. She is one of the few dolls I haven't made up or modded myself (only her fin and tail is my doing) because I had been charmed by her fine features and I didn't want nor felt the need to add anything to them.
I had only asked the Soom Team a custom make-up in shades of blue as I wanted her to be a marine creature...
...a few months later they released their gorgeous Monthly Doll Vega, a merman in shades of blue... mere coincidence or do "great minds" really think alike?

I like to think that I actually suggested them the idea! ;p Just for fun...
They weren't however dealing with their first mermaid... anyhow, they did a great job of it.

Après un long hiatus (c' était quand même les vacances...), je reviens avec un mini-article pour une mini poupée...

A la base je ne suis pas fort branché "petits animaux" ou "anthro" en ce qui concerne la résine mais j' avais craqué pour ce petit renard de chez Dollzone, reçu en cadeau avec un corps de 70cm (aujourd' hui revendu) acheté alors pour une autre de mes poupées.

Bref j' ai naturellement tout de suite pensé au concept du Kitsune, ces youkai esprits-renards facétieux et adeptes de la métamorphose du folklore japonais.
Je me suis inspiré des masques traditionnels de renard pour son make-up; ses yeux sont faits maison.

Tout simple, tout mignon...

Son nom s' écrit en japonais avec les kanjis ko et kumo et son nom signifie donc renard-nuage.

So I had immediately and naturally thought of the concept of the Kitsune for him, those mischievous and shape-shifting fox-spirit youkai from japanese folklore.
The inspiration for his make-up were the traditionnal fox masks; his eyes are home-made.

All simplicity and cuteness...

His name in japanese is written with the kanji characters ko and kumo so his name actually means fox-cloud.

Gorgô

... ou Médousa: Medusa, la Gorgone, la Méduse...

Je garderai cependant plus volontiers Gorgô, qui est son nom originel, et pour nous plus étrange.

A l' origine, elle était une puissante et redoutable Déesse de la Terre, de la Vie et de la Mort, Maîtresse des Animaux et des Mystères... Elle était unique: Gorgô, LA Gorgone.

Avec le temps, elle s'est comme souvent scindée en une triade de déesses, et son mythe a fort évolué et s'est complexifié au cours des siècles pour devenir une tragédie...

... que je vais tenter de vous conter à présent.

Méduse était une jeune déesse, et avec ses soeurs aînées Sthenno et Euryale, elles formaient une triade: les Gorgones.

Elles étaient filles de Phorcys (père) et Céto (mère), Dieux des abysses marins, gardiens des monstres de la mer et vassaux de Poséidon, le Maître des Mers.
Ces derniers avaient engendré toutes sortes de monstres: les Grées, nées "vieilles", au corps et aux cheveux blancs comme neige et qui ne possédaient qu' un seul oeil et une seule dent pour elles trois, et avec lesquels elles voyaient et prédisaient le passé, le présent et le futur; Echidna qui était mi femme, mi serpent géant; et un grand serpent-dragon.

Les Gorgones n' étaient cependant pas si monstrueuses; elles ressemblaient à de fières et belles jeunes femmes, sauvages et vigoureuses. Elles possédaient en outre des ailes d' or leur permettant de voler au-dessus des vagues, domaine de leurs parents.

La plus belle était sans contestation la cadette, Méduse. Elle possédait une chevelure bouclée et luxuriante pareille à une cascade d' or, et un regard magnétique... et c'est hélas cette beauté qui entraîna sa perte.

Pour une raison mystérieuse, les Moires, inflexibles déesses du Destin face auquel même les Dieux doivent se plier, avaient utilisé pour tisser le fil de sa vie non pas l' or pur réservé aux Immortels dont le fil n' est jamais tranché, mais l' argent des Demi-Dieux et des Nymphes.

Ce qui fit que Méduse, bien que née de parents immortels, était mortelle et vulnérable.
Horrible destin pour une déesse!
Ses soeurs quant à elles prirent l' habitude d' être extrêmement protectrices à son égard; et on aurait pu en rester là, mais...

...on comprend cependant aisément que pour se défendre d' une telle injustice du Destin, Méduse se réfugia dans la vanité.

Elle commença par se comparer à Athéna, la Vierge Guerrière, déesse de la sagesse et protectrice armée de la paix.
Athéna était appelée "la Déesse aux Yeux Etincelants"... Méduse rétorqua que ses yeux valaient bien les siens, et que si l' on y trouvait à redire, elle était de toutes façons gagnante grâce à sa magnifique chevelure.
Athéna, dont le seul défaut était une vanité mal placée, fut piquée au vif, mais par pitié sans doute, ne réagit pas... tout de suite.

Ensuite, Méduse se prit à séduire son maître Poséidon, qui était alors encore célibataire (ce n'est que plus tard qu'il prit pour épouse la Néréide Amphitrite)...
Il est fort probable qu' elle espérait le rendre fou d' elle pour qu' il l' épouse ensuite, car une théogamie, mariage divin, lui aurait assuré l' Immortalité qui lui avait été refusée: lors de la cérémonie, les époux divins boivent le Nectar, breuvage qui rend immortels même les simples humains et qui assurent aux Dieux de l' Olympe une jeunesse et une beauté éternelles...

Mal lui en prit.

Poséidon devint effectivement fou d' elle, mais non pas d' amour, sinon de désir.
Il surgit des vagues un jour où Méduse l' attendait langoureusement au bord de la mer, et elle fut elle-même si effrayée de sa férocité qu' elle s' enfuit terrorisée.
Elle se transforma en jument aux ailes d' or; mais Poséidon, qui lui-même était aussi le dieu auquel le cheval était consacré, prit cela pour un jeu et se transforma en puissant étalon blanc comme l' écume. Il la poursuivit si longtemps, que pour finir, à bout de forces, Méduse se réfugia dans un temple, enceinte sacrée, en espérant que cela arrêterait son divin persécuteur.

Aveuglé par le désir, et encore abruti par sa forme animale, Poséidon n' y prit pas garde et la viola une première fois sous cette forme. Vaincue, Méduse reprit figure humaine, Poséidon aussi, et il la posséda une seconde fois sous son aspect humain.

Mais une fois son plaisir pris... il abandonna la malheureuse à son sort.

Il se trouva que le temple en question était celui d' Athéna, Déesse Vierge... ils venaient donc d' y perpétrer un sacrilège impardonnable que la déesse ressentit immédiatement!
Furieuse, elle se précipita dans son sanctuaire pour châtier les impudents, et se trouva nez à nez avec son oncle Poséidon qui s' en allait, et la pauvre Méduse.

Or Athéna et Poséidon se détestaient cordialement depuis des temps immémoriaux.
Ils se faisaient souvent la guerre pour des questions de territoire... mais ne pouvaient cependant pas s' affronter directement, car l' un était le frère de Zeus, le Maître des Dieux, l' autre, sa fille préférée... Athéna ne pouvait donc pas s' en prendre directement à son oncle sous crainte de littéralement devoir affronter les foudres paternelles!
Poséidon s' en tira donc avec de plates et hypocrites excuses.

La déesse outrée et rendue plus enragée encore par la frustration, tourna toute sa haine envers Méduse, cette insupportable petite péronnelle qui de surcroît avait osé jadis se prétendre plus belle qu' elle.

Elle la maudit donc, d' une des plus horribles malédictions jamais proférées... et le résultat dépassa en horreur tout ce qu' elle aurait pu imaginer.
Voilà ce qui arrive quand une déesse de la raison perd la raison... elle le regretta amèrement par la suite, mais les paroles avaient été proférées, et la malédiction enracinée dans la chair-même de Méduse.

Sa peau se durcit comme la pierre, se couvrant par endroits d' écailles de dragon, son sourire fut défiguré par des dents de bête féroce, ses mains se tordirent en de redoutables griffes de rapace en bronze, sa merveilleuse chevelure, comble de l' ironie, se transforma en un paquet de vipères entées à son crâne.
Mais le plus noir de la malédiction, (et peut-être ce qu' il y avait de plus noir dans Athéna qui s' en retrouva alors libérée) se figea dans son regard... désormais, tout être vivant et mortel qui le croisait était changé à jamais en statue de pierre. Les immortels eux-même, à l' abri de la mort, s' en retrouvaient cependant figés d' horreur.

Terrorisée, Méduse s' enfuit, et tous ceux qu' elle croisait se changeaient en pierre, hommes et bêtes. Elle s' en fut retrouver ses soeurs, qui, immortelles, échappèrent à la pétrification, mais en perdirent la raison.
Elles furent prisent d' une rage insensée qui tordit leurs beaux visage en une grimace de haine qui plus jamais ne les quitta. Elles en devinrent si terrifiantes qu' elles finirent par ressembler à leur soeur métamorphosée, et quiconque les voyaient étaient paralysés de terreur. Elles conservèrent cependant leur affection pour leur soeur et restèrent à ses côtés.

Eperdues de haine envers le monde entier, elles se livrèrent à de terribles déprédations, tuant aveuglément: ceux que Méduse ne pétrifiait pas étaient mis en pièces par Sthenno et Euryale.
Exaspérés, les Dieux les exilèrent sur une île secrète, en Extrême-Occident, de l' autre côté de l' Océan... divers aventuriers tentèrent en vain de tuer Méduse, jusqu' à ce que le héros Persée, qui, aidé d' Athéna et Hermès, mette fin à sa triste existence en la décapitant.

De son cou et de son sang jaillirent les deux enfants qu' elle avait eu de Poséidon et qui ne pouvaient naître à cause de sa métamorphose: le merveilleux cheval ailé Pégase (animal car c'est sous cette forme que Poséidon l' avait d' abord possédée) et Chrysaor, le Guerrier au Glaive d' Or, qui naquit adulte et brandissant l' arme divine qui lui donna son nom.

La mort délivra Méduse de la malédiction... qui resta cependant enracinée dans son cadavre: son regard pétrificateur, lui seul, resta immortel et quiconque voyait la tête monstrueuse se changeait en pierre. Persée en fit bon usage et la donna ensuite à sa protectrice, Athéna.

Cette dernière la fixa au centre de son égide, comme symbole de terreur contre ses ennemis... mais aussi sans doute comme rappel constant que la colère est mauvaise conseillère et qu' en toute chose il faut garder son sang-froid!

C'est là la version la plus récente et complète du mythe, si l' on prend le soin de rassembler et compiler les diverses sources (souvent contradictoires), ce que je me suis amusé à faire... je n' y ai apporté mon grain de sel que dans l' interprétation des motivations des personnages. ;)

Néanmoins ça n'est pas vraiment le destin malheureux de Méduse qui m' intéressait.

A l' origine donc, il n' y avait qu' une seule Gorgô, puissante et monstrueuse.
Et comme souvent dans la fin de l' Antiquité, les synchrétismes religieux tardifs finirent par opérer un étonnant retour aux sources.

Ainsi, Gorgô se confondait pour les sorcières de l' Antiquité avec les autres déesses infernales:

Perséphone, la reine du monde sous-terrain, Hécate, déesse des sorcières, des fantômes et des mystères, Artémis, la Vierge Chasseresse, dans son aspect sauvage et Séléné, la lune, quand elle est pleine.

Elles l' invoquaient ainsi:

" O amie et compagne de la nuit toi qui te réjouis aux aboiements des chiens et au sang répandu qui erres au coeur des brouillards parmi les tombes , qui appelles le sang et apportes le terreur aux mortels , Gorgô, Mormô, lune aux milles visage , regarde favorablement nos sacrifices."
(Mormô est une fille d' Hécate, une démonesse friande de la chair des petits enfants...)

La voici...

... aka Medousa: Medusa, the Gorgon...

I will however rather stick with Gorgô, which is her original name, and still filled with its primal mystery.

Originally she was a mighty and awesome Chthonic Goddess, of Life and Death, a Mistress of the Wild Beasts and Mysteries... She was one: Gorgô, THE Gorgon.

With time she was split into a triad of goddesses , as it is often the case in mythology, and her myth evolved and grew more complex through the centuries, until it became quite a tragedy...

... which goes something like this:

Medusa was a young goddess, and together with her elder sisters Sthenno and Euryale, they were forming a triad: the Gorgons.

They were the daughters of father Phorcys and mother Ceto, gods of the marine abyss and keepers of the great sea monsters dwelling fathoms below; vassals of the great Poseidon, the Master of the Seas.
Those gods had spawned a legion of strange monsters: the three Graeae, born "old" and withered, whose bodies were as white as snow and who were sharing a single eye and a single tooth between themselves, through which they could see and predict the past, the present and the future; Echidna who was a lovely maid to her waist and a gigantic and ferocious snake below; and a huge and ferocious snake-dragon.

However the Gorgons were not that monstruous. They looked like proud young women, fair, wild and strong. They had moreover golden wings that allowed them to fly above the waves marking the limits of their parents' territory.

The loveliest was without hesitation the youngest, Medusa. Her hair was a cascade of thick, lush golden curls; and her huge, wild eyes possessed a magnetic charm... but that very beauty eventually proved to be her downfall.

For some mysterious reason, the Moirae, unyielding Goddesses of Fate to which even the gods must bow down, had weaved the thread of her life not in the pure gold reserved to the Immortals whose thread is never severed, but in the silver of the Demigods and the Nymphs.

For that reason alone, Medusa, although born of two immortal parents, was herself mortal and vulnerable.
Horrible fate for a goddess!
As for her sisters, they grew extremely protective of her and the story could have stopped there, but...

...one can easily understand that in front of such inequity, Medusa found solace in her only advantage, beauty, and thus in vanity.

She started by comparing herself to Athena,the Warrior Maid, Goddess of Wisdom and armed protector of peace.
Athena was called "the Goddess of the Sparkling Eyes"... to which Medusa retorted that her own eyes were at least as beautiful, and if someone would say otherwise, she was in any case the winner thanks to her wonderful hair.
Athena, whose only flaw of character was a regrettable streak of vanity, was quite piqued by her boldness but maybe out of pity, she didn't answer... at first.

Then, Medusa took upon herself to seduce her liege Poseidon, who by that time was still a bachelor (he later took the Nereid Amphitrite for his wife)...
It is likely that she was hoping to render him hopelessly in love with her so that he would eventually marry her, for a theogamy, a divine wedding, would have granted her the Immortality she had been denied at birth: during the heavenly ceremony, the divine couple partake of the Nectar, divine drink that could grant immortality even to the mortals and which assured the Olympians eternal youth and beauty...

She couldn't have made a worst move.

Poseidon went indeed completely mad about her... not out of love but of sheer lust.
He rose from the waves one day that Medusa was waiting foe him, striking sultry poses... she was herself so scared by his male ferocity that she ran off in terror.
She first turned into a mare with golden wings, but Poseidon, himself a patron god of horses, took it as a game and transformed himself into a mighty foam-white stallion. He chased her for such a long time that Medusa, eventually exhausted, took refuge in a temple, on sacred soil, hoping that it would stop the enamoured god.

But blinded by desire and still dazed by his actual animal shape, Poseidon didn't take notice and raped her a first time under their horselike appearance. Defeated, Medusa turned back to her human shape and so did Poseidon, raping her a second time.

But once satisfied... he abandonned the unfortunate girl to her fate.

However, the temple happened to be Athena's... a Virgin Goddess. They had thus desecrated it and Athena felt immediately the sacrilege!
Infuriated, she rushed to her sanctuary to smite the culprits; only to find her uncle Poseidon and poor Medusa.

Now, Athena and Poseidon hated each-other with a passion since immemorial times.
They were often waging war against each-other for territory matters, but couldn't openly and directly fight each-other, with one being the brother of Zeus, Master of the Gods, and the other his favourite daughter...
Thus Athena couldn't directly confront and punish her uncle for fear of litteraly facing the wrath of her thundering father!
And Poseidon got eventually away with some flat and empty apology.

The exasperated goddess, further infuriated out of sheer frustration, turned all of her hatred towards Medusa, that unbearable wench who had had, moreover, the nerve of boasting to be fairer than she, an Olympian.

Thus she cursed her, with one of the most terrible curses ever uttered... and the result surpassed everything she might actually have imagined.
That's what happens when a Goddess of Wisdom and Reason loses her head... she came to regret it bitterly afterwards, but the terrible words had been spoken, and the curse nested istelf in the very flesh of Medusa.

Her skin became harder than stone, covering itself in dragon scales in several places; her smile distorted by the tusks of a wild beast, her hands became brazen talons; and as by mockery, each levely lock of her wonderful hair became a fierce viper, grafted to her skull, crowning her in living, writhing horror.
But the darkest of the curse (and maybe what was darkest in Athena herself who came to be freed from it by channeling it all into her ennemy) did fix itself into her gaze...
From then on, any living thing bound to die would be turned to cold stone upon sharing a single gaze with her. Even immortals, though safe from death and petrification, were temporarily paralyzed with horror while looking at her.

Terrorized, Medusa ran away, and every living being crossing her gaze was instantly turned into statues, men and beasts alike. She went to her sisters, who escaped petrification thanks to their immortality, but they irrevocably lost their sanity out of horror and grief for their beloved sister.
They became struck with a mad, brutish rage which distorted their beautiful faces into a grimaces of hate that never left them. They became so fierce and terrifying that they came to resemble their transformed sister, and whoever saw them were paralyzed with fear. However, they instinctively retained their affection for their sister and they stayed by her side.

Overwhelmed with intense hatred towards the whole world, they started rampaging it, blindly killing anyone crossing their path: those escaping Medusa's petrifying gaze were torn to pieces by Sthenno and Euryale's claws.
Exasperated, the Gods exiled them on a secret and far-off island in the West, beyond the Ocean... various heroes and adventurers tried in vain to kill her, until the hero Perseus, thanks to some help from Athena and Hermes, ended her miserable life by beheading her.

From the wound of her neck and her gushing blood sprang the two children Poseidon had conceived and whose birth had been impeded by her metamorphosis: the wondrous winged steed Pegasus (a horse because it is in that shape that Poseidon had first possessed her) and the hero Chrysaor, the Warrior of the Golden Blade, who was born adult and brandishing the golden sword that was his namesake.

Death freed Medusa from the curse... but it stayed however rooted to her corpse: her stone-gaze alone became immortal and whoever beheld the monstruous head was turned to stone. Perseus put it to good use and eventually offered it to his patron, Athena.

The goddess fixed it in the center of her Aegis, as a symbol of terror against her ennemies... but maybe also as a constant reminder that anger is a bad counselor and that in all thing one must keep one's cool!

That was the most recent and complete version of the myth, if one is willing to gather and compile the various (and sometimes very contradictory) sources, which I enjoyed doing very much... I only added some personnal interpretation as far as the motivation of the characters are concerned. ;)

However , that isn't really the unhappy fate of Medusa that appealed to me.

Once again, there was only one original Gorgô, mighty and monstruous.
And as it is often the case in late Antiquity, religious synchretisms eventually operated a singular return to basics.

Thus, to the witches of Antiquity, Gorgô was assimilated to the other infernal goddesses:

Persephone, Queen of the Underworld, Hecate, goddess of the witches, ghosts and mysteries, Artemis, the Hunter Maiden, in her wild aspect, and Selene, the moon, when at its fullest.

They invoked her with those words:

" O friend and companion of night, thou who rejoicest in the baying of dogs and spilt blood, who wanders in the midst of shades among the tombs, who longest for blood and bringest terror to mortals, Gorgo, Mormo, thousand-faced moon, look favourably on our sacrifices!"
(Mormo was a daughter of Hecate, a child-eating demoness...)

(Oubliez la petite amie de Peter Parker... c'est pas trop le genre de fille simple et sympa!)

Bon!

Je vais "ouvrir le bal" avec ce qui est probablement ma poupée la plus personnelle...

Elle est née il y a bien longtemps, aussi bien en réalité qu' en imagination.

J' étais un gamin de dix-sept ans, du genre qu' on pourrait qualifier de "pré-Goth" (car au début des années 90, avoir ce genre de lubies ne s' appelait pas encore ainsi dans mon patelin) et je lisais énormément de romans de fantasy, du Mike Moorcock, Edgar Allan Poe et HP Lovecraft tout en écoutant du heavy metal , surtout mon groupe favori, Megadeth.

A cette époque je suis tombé bizarrement fort malade... rien de sérieux si ce n'est une fièvre intense qui ne baissa pas avant des semaines. Malgré de multiples examens on ne parvint jamais à diagnostiquer mon mal; j' ai longtemps pensé qu' il s' agissait de l' expression de mon angoisse et de mon ennui adolescent mais on m' assura bientôt que si elle pouvait engendrer des symptômes de maladie, la simple psychosomatisation ne pouvait en aucun cas faire monter la température.

C'est alors que j' eus ce rêve très frappant.

Je traversais les corridors d' une vaste et ancienne demeure? Il faisait nuit et une tempête se déchaînait au-dehors. Tout était flou dans la maison et tout ce que je puis me rappeler était l' impression qu' elle était très vieille, et désertée depuis longtemps.
Je tombai alors nez à nez avec un antique portrait, la seule chose à avoir de la netteté dans cet étrange environnement; et cela avec une intensité presque douloureuse.
Et ce portrait semblait vivant et puissant.

Il représentait une dame, vêtue de rouge sang, couronnée d' une crinière flamboyante et regard sauvage et hypnotique d' émeraude. Elle était étrange et fascinante, à la frontière de multiples extrêmes: belle et hideuse, humaine et inhumaine... elle avait l' air immensément puissante. Et elle me rendait mon regard.

Le tableau avait l' air très ancien et pourtant je savais qu' elle était toujours vivante, d' une manière ou d' une autre, tout comme son portrait l' était.
Et je savais qu' elle était sorcière.

Je n' avais pas peur... elle n' était pas menaçante. Mais on avait le sentiment qu' elle était capable de tout. Elle était d' une certaine manière au-delà du Bien et du Mal, comme les véritables Fées d' antan.
Et elle m' était étrangement familière.

Un nom était écrit dans le coin supérieur du tableau:

Mary Jane.

Il n' y eut rien de plus à ce rêve si ce n'est la forte impression qu' il me laissa...
J' ai ressenti le besoin de la dessiner juste après. Et le personnage ne m' a plus jamais vraiment quitté.

On m' a dit longtemps après que j' avais peut-être rencontré mon "anima", ma part féminine?
Une idée intéressante!

Avec le temps, j' ai essayé de recréer son histoire, en devinant à tâtons à partir d' intuitions: parfois je "sens" que ça colle ou pas et ce n'est pas toujours facile de trouver le chemin qui la suit...

Quoi qu'il en soit je l' imagine peut-être Anglaise, peut-être aussi avec des origines celtiques.
Elle a dû naître à une époque fort reculée et où la mentalité féodale était encore bien ancrée... ainsi que les pires superstitions.
Issue d' une famille aristocratique mais cependant modeste, elle a perdu très vite sa famille (Guerres? Peste?) et s'est retrouvée seule, dans son manoir isolé dans la nature(plutôt dans les Highlands! Serait-elle d' ascendance écossaise?).

Cela ne l' a pas trop dérangée, car c'est une nature solitaire...

Assoiffée de connaissance, elle s'est instruite toute seule à travers les livres, s'en procurant en cachette à une époque où il ne faisait pas bon être une femme seule et en savoir trop...
Cette soif de savoir l' a poussée à aller toujours plus loin et à bientôt dépasser les frontières de la science "canonique", qui plus est alors encore si restreinte... pour se retrouver dans le domaine de l' Occultisme, de la Magie ...et tout ce qui alors sentait le souffre.
Je ne la vois pas s' acoquiner avec le Diable mais plutôt explorer d' autres univers, d' étranges passages à travers le temps, l' espace; mais aussi converser avec les Esprits d' autres Plans, tels les Élémentaux.

Bien sûr, l' obscurantisme ambiant et rampant de son entourage a fini par avoir vent de ses recherches (cependant très discrètes...) et bientôt une troupe de villageois obtus menés par un prêtre plus préoccupé du Démon que du Bon Dieu ont fait irruption dans sa demeure pour la capturer, la "juger", puis la brûler vive pour sorcellerie.

Ils ne l' ont jamais trouvée.

Pour se venger, ils mirent le feu à son manoir et l' histoire s' arrêta là pour eux.

Mais après... on retrouve des échos du passage de Mary Jane... à travers les siècles.
Elle apparaît brièvement ici et là, se mêlant rarement à la société, et uniquement en vue de quelque recherche. Chaque fois, elle semble échapper à quiconque essaye de retrouver sa trace...

Qui est-elle? Qu' est-elle devenue?

Ce qui est sûr, c'est qu' elle a trouvé un moyen d' éluder la mort et de rester éternellement jeune en parcourant les Cercles du Temps...

Et je n' en suis pas arrivé plus loin! Résumé très romantique et naïve mais aussi très amusante à imaginer, et je pense qu' elle lui va plutôt pas mal, même si plusieurs détails seront sans doute appelés à changer avec le temps.

Quoiqu'il en soit il est certain qu' elle est née de mes goûts littéraires et musicaux de l' époque.
Il y a beaucoup de la Ligeia de Poe en elle. Le Voyage dans le Temps me vient sans doute du "Rêve dans la Maison de la Sorcière" de Lovecraft et du concept de Multivers de Moorcock.

Quant à son nom et au thème de la "sorcière", il vient d' une chanson de Megadeth, Mary Jane, même si j' ai appris par après que la Mary Jane qui l' inspira diffère fort de la mienne.

Pour ce qui est de sa crinière rousse... elle a sans doute été suggérée à mon inconscient enfiévré et adolescent par la très semblable crinière flamboyante de Dave Mustaine, le leader de Megadeth! J' étais un véritable fan, après tout.

Elle est restée auprès de moi toutes ces années... quand j' ai finalement attrapé le "virus résineux", il m' a semblé tout à fait naturel de l' incarner en BJD.
Puisqu' elle avait un visage et une implantation capillaire si particulière, je n' ai pas eu d' autre choix que de partir de zéro pour la réaliser. Pour ce qui est du corps, j' ai choisi le mince et très délicatement sculpté Flexi-Perennial de Domuya.

I will "open the ball" with what is probably my most personnal doll...

She was born a very long time ago, both in fantasy and reality.

I was a seventeen-year-old-pre-goth kid (from my side of the world, if you were into that stuff you didn't know you were kind of "goth" in the early nineties...) and I was reading a lot of fantasy, Mike Moorcock, Edgar Allan Poe and HP Lovecraft while listening to heavy metal, mostly Megadeth.

And then I got very sick... nothing serious but I had a lot of fever for weeks and it wouldn't go down. They never found out what I had and it's still a mystery; I thought for a long time it was my juvenile angst and boredom that chose to express itself that way until told that you cannot make your temperature rise out of psychosomatisation.

That's when I got this very, very vivid dream.

I was wandering the corridors of a vast and ancient mansion at night while a storm was raging outside. Everything was blurry inside the house, all I know is that it felt very ancient and empty. Then I discovered an old portrait and it was the only thing that was in focus, painfully so.
And it felt alive and potent.
It represented a lady, dressed in bloody red, with a fiery mane of hair and two large, wild emerald eyes. She was strange and utterly fascinating, at the crossroads of many extremes: beautiful and hideous, human and inhuman... she looked immensely powerful. And she was staring back at me.

The painting looked very ancient and yet I knew she was still alive, somehow, like her portrait was.
And I knew she was a witch.

I wasn't afraid... she wasn't threatening. But you had the feeling that she was capable of everything. She was somehow beyond good and evil, like the true fairies of old.
And she was uncannily familiar somehow.

One name was written in the upper corner of the painting:

Mary Jane.

There was nothing more to that dream except the very strong impression it left in me...
I had to draw her afterwards. And the character never really left me.

I was told later on that I had maybe met my "anima", the feminine part of myself?
A most interesting idea!

With time I have tried to recreate her history, painfully choosing from hunches and sheer intuition: sometimes it "feels" right or completely wrong and it's not always easy to find my way to her...

Anyway, I imagine her as maybe English, maybe with a bit of celtic ascent.
She was born somewhere during the Middle Ages, in a time of feodality and superstition; from an aristocratic yet modest family.
She very soon lost her family (war? Pest?) and found herself isolated in her manor, isolated in the wilderness (... maybe the Highlands? Then she would be Scottish, wouldn't she!).

Anyway, it didn't bother her lonesome nature...

Thirsting for knowledge, she educated herself through books that she was obtaining in secret, in a time when it wasn't too well recommended to be wise and a woman...

That thirst for knowledge drove her to dig further and further and eventually go beyond the boundaries of "canonic science", which was then very restricted, to finally reach the realms of the Occult and Magick. All that smelled of brimstone back then...

I don't see her dealing with the Devils and his minions, but rather exploring new universes, strange gateways through time and space, and communicating with Spirits from other Realms such as Elementals and Ethereans.

Of course, the creeping obscurantism of her time eventually heard of her researches, inconspicuous as it might have been, and soon an angry mob of obtuse villagers lead by a fanatic priest more preoccupied with Satan than the Lord broke in her house to capture her, "judge" her than burn her for witchcraft.

They never found her.

Out of frustration they burned her manor to the ground and that's where the story ended as far as they were concerned.

However... later on traces of Mary Jane's passage throug the centuries can be found.
She briefly appears here and there, seldom mixing with society, and only in order to further her research. She always eludes any attempt to follow her step...

Who is she, what has she become?

She certainly has found a way to elude Death and stay eternally young by wandering the Circles of Time.

And that's as far as I have come! Quite romantic and naive I might add, but it's a lot of fun and I think it suits her quite well, although details might change with time!

Anyway, it is certain that she was born out of my litterary and musical tastes of the time.
There is a lot of Poe's Ligeia in her. The Time-wandering has a lot to do with Lovecraft's "Dream in the Witch House" and Moorcock's Multiverse.

And her name and the "witch theme" comes from a song of Megadeth, Mary Jane, even though I learnt much later that the Mary Jane witch that inspired their song is quite different from mine.

As for the red mane... maybe it was suggested to my uncounscious mind by the very same fiery mane of Dave Mustaine, Megadeth's leader! I was a true fan of his after all.

She stayed with me all those years... when I finally caught the resin virus, it felt only natural to incarnate her in a BJD.
Since she had such a peculiar face and hair implantation, I had no choice but to make her head and wig from scratch. As for the body, I chose the slender and very finely sculpted Flexi-Perennial by Domuya.

Bon, il était temps de s'y mettre...

Bienvenue sur ce blog dédié à une de mes passions (parmi bien d' autres mais il faut bien commencer quelque part): les poupées.

A moins de faire partie vous-mêmes de cette communauté de doll addicts, pourquoi les poupées me direz-vous?

Depuis toujours j' ai été passionné par les histoires, contes, mythes et légendes.
Et bien plus encore que les histoires et intrigues elles-mêmes, par les héros, monstres et dieux qui les peuplent: les personnages.
C'est sans doute la raison pour laquelle je me suis tourné professionnellement vers le dessin animé, qui me permet de satisfaire cette vieille passion ainsi qu' un besoin fondamental pour moi, à savoir le dessin.

Cependant, même si j' ai toujours aimé illustrer mes histoires et légendes préférées, la satisfaction d' incarner un personnage en trois dimensions, et jusque dans les moindres détails vestimentaires, s'est très vite faite sentir.

En ce sens, les poupées sont le meilleur support que l' on puisse trouver... et parmi elles, le nec plus ultra est bien sûr la BJD, créée spécialement dans ce but de customisation et de personnalisation. Bref, j' ai été vite mordu par le bacille résineux et même si ça s'est déclaré sur le tard, c'est un long cheminement qui m' y a conduit!

Les poupées et les BJD plus encore interpellent, fascinent, et souvent même dérangent...
Pourquoi?
Parce qu' elles nous ressemblent.

Mais sans être de simples copies. Leur stylisation les éloigne de nous tout en les rapprochant paradoxalement par la synthèse visuelle d' éléments psychologiques et émotionnels.
Elles sont un support parfait dans lequel nous projetons, consciemment ou non, aussi bien rêves qu' angoisses... Bref elles jouent sur nous, suivant l' approche que nous avons vis-à-vis d' elles, entre l' attraction positive et la répulsion de cette fameuse inquiétante étrangeté.

Mais le malaise ou le plaisir qu' elles suscitent n'est pas ailleurs qu' en nous.
Elles sont miroirs. Même si souvent déformants... leur forme humaine suffit à instaurer ce dialogue entre elles et nous... jusqu' à, parfois, en être transcendant.

C'est en ce sens que "jouer à la poupée" a, selon moi, toujours été quelque chose de primordial et proche du rituel.

Dans beaucoup de cultures (dont asiatiques), les poupées étaient à la base des objets sacrés, des "réceptacles de la divinité". Car dans le fond, les premières poupées étaient des eidolon, des images sacrées, réceptacles du divin, que l' on fêtait habillait, parfumait; auxquelles on rendait hommage. Il en était ainsi dans l' Antiquité grecque: ainsi le fameux Palladion, représentation d' Athéna tombée du ciel et garant de la prospérité de Troie, qui une fois dérobé par les Achéens, précipita la chute de la Ville Sainte.

Ces idoles n' étaient pas des statues de pierre figées mais des idoles souvent articulées, avec un "vrai" regard, et, selon les canons esthétiques en vigueur dans l' Antiquité (à savoir la mimesis, l' imitation de la vie), peintes de manière réaliste et très vivante; parées et habillées avec soin et différemment selon les saisons et les fêtes qui se succédaient...

Cette coutume n' a pas disparu, si l' on se penche ne serait-ce que sur les représentations des dieux Hindouistes et même sans chercher l' exotisme, dans les Vierges processionelles,toutes couronnées d' or et parées de dentelles... de véritables poupées, même si à caractère sacré.

Mais est-ce forcément antinomique?

Jeu et rite ont toujours été liés. Le jeu est au développement de l' être humain ce que le rite est à celui des sociétés humaines.

Au confluent du jeu et du rite, du personnel et de l' universel, du trivial et du sacré... se trouve la poupée, idole parfaite.

Enfin, pour clore cette introduction un peu indigeste: OUI, je suis un geek! ;p

J' ai avec le temps constitué une petite tribu, customisée par mes soins, selon mes lubies, envies, plaisirs et rêves d' enfant de 7 à 77 ans (j' ei encore de la marge, donc...); je tenterai de vous les présenter ici.

Welcome to this blog dedicated to one of my many hobbies and passions (among many others but you gotta start somewhere...): dolls.

Unless you are yourself part of that "doll addicts" community, you might wonder: "why dolls"?

I have ever been a fan of stories, fairy tales, myth and legend.
And more than the mere stories and plots in themselves, what truly fascinated me were the heroes, gods and monsters that filled them: the characters.

That's certainly why I have chosen animation as my professionnal orientation, because it allows me to satisfy that old passion as well as another very fundamental need of mine: drawing.

However, even though I have always loved to illustrate my favourite tales and legends; very soon arose the need and the sheer satisfaction of incarnating a character in a three-dimensionnal way, to the tiniest details of accessories and clothes.

In that sense, dolls are the best base ever... and as far as dolls are concerned, BJDs are of course the best, as they were created and especially designed to be customized. I have been soon infected by the resin virus, even though it broke out kind of late, through a long evolution process which started while I was still a child.

Dolls, and BJDs even more, question us, fascinate us and very often, disturb us...
Why is that so?
Because they look like us.

But without being mere copies. Their stylization puts a distance between us while paradoxally bringing them closer through the visual translation of psychological and emotionnal elements.
They are the perfect base and receptacle into which we project ourselves, wether consciously or not, as well as our dreams and fears... In other words, they play, following our personnal approach to them, between positive attraction and the repulsion of the notorious uncanny valley.

However, the feeling of uneasiness or the pleasure they stir up is nowhere to be found but in ourselves.
They are mirrors. Even if often distorting ones... their humanoid shape is enough to initiate the dialog between them and us... sometimes to the point of transcendency.

That is why "playing doll" has always been in my opinion very close to something primal and the idea of ritual.

In many cultures (including asian), dolls were sacred objects to begin with, sacred images destined to receive the god , receptacles of teh divine. They were celebrated, honored, clothed, perfumed. It was so during Greek Antiquity: the famous Palladion, a wooden image of Athena, fallen from the heavens and key to the prosperity of the city of Troy until it was stolen by the Achaeans; which precipitated the doom of the Holy City.

Those idoles were no fixed and immutable stone statues but often jointed, with a "real" gaze through glass or stone eyes, and following the esthetics of Antiquity (mimesis, the imitation of Life), painted in very realistic and living colours, ornated and clothed and according to the seasons and festivals which celebrated their divinity.

That custom hasn't completely disappeared nowadays, with the representation of Hindu gods and without getting so exotic, with all the processionnal Madonnas, crowned with gold and adorned with lace... they are truly dolls even though with a sacred purpose and function.

But is it really antinomic?

Game and rite have always been linked. Playing is to the development of the human individual what rite is to that of human communities.

At the convergence of game and rite, of the personnal and the universal, the sacred and the mundane... is the doll, the perfect idol.

Finally, to resume this rather heavy introduction: YES,I'm a geek! Obviously. ;p
